How to you obtain the photographs to make composites?
April 24, 2013 at 4:07 PM
Hélène
You obtain composites by superposition of transparent pictures ( on Photoshop ) of different people.
It turns out that beauty is the result of average of faces. You can see this on these pictures. It’s a mathematic fact. In another way, beauty is the result of the gold number. I don’t know if average of faces and gold number are the same way.

Well most of them get the surgery in their teens before they’re famous, so probably after surgery, unless they are grabbing images of children. XD I will expect to see the typical sharper facial features that I see in famous Koreans with surgery.

I didn’t think she would look much different from the Japanese and Chinese one, especially considering how much cosmetic surgery Koreans get on their eyes and sometimes noses, they would probably look identical, so it was not worth the effort.

Actually Lina’s logic doesn’t make sense.
If Japanese men raped Korean women, then wouldn’t the Koreans produce children that looked Japanese? Because the physical traits of the conquerors would be dominant…Editor Edit: No.
Only 250,000 Norman French conquered the England in 1066, out of a population of millions.
Even if everyone of those men raped and Anglo-Saxon woman, it is highly unlikely they would strongly affect the overall genome. You just don’t need that many armed organized men to subdue a population. Due Ukrainians and Russians look like Mongolians? Do Iranians? They were all conquered by Turko-Mongols. Yes, some in those populations have some “Mongolic features” but the majority definitely do not. Do most Chinese look Mongol or Manchu? I would say no, although there are some who do.
Please read here, and apply the same logic to Japanese invasions:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/05/science/05cnd-brits.html
Please read some about population genetics and history before making such comments on this site. Thanks.

Actually, russians do have a lot of asian genes. not just from the mongol invasion but from being literally IN asia. your female sample seems to have very nordic features which might be original slavic but not very common nowadays. because of the overall mixing, most people in russia have dark hair and dark eyes. some of my family is from sibera and we’ve had mongol anscestors – some of my relatives do have asian features. russia is too big and contains too many republics to simply say it hasn’t been affected by any other nationalities…

Normans weren’t French, and as the article makes clear, English aren’t Anglo-saxons. 250,000 Normans sounds way too high – I think that’s the D-Day invasion – they only had small boats in those days! The numbers I’ve seen suggest 20,000 or so.

…and the Slavs in what is now Ukraine warred and intermarried with Kipchak nomads (Polovtsi in Ukrainian) for many hundred years, so that even the descriptions of female beauty in Ukrainian folk songs differ decidedly from the Slavic type. This would be easy to see in a Ukrainian vs Belorussian composite.

Hey, I just did spend a fair amount of time reading through the comments on the European composites, and I didn’t find that info anywhere. Perhaps you could explain your methodology and thoughts on the subject in a blog post, instead of making people hunt for it? I’d especially be interested in stuff like sample sizes, regions where pics may have been pulled from or biased toward, and so on. Thanks.

Yes,Yes, I know Norman = Norse Man, blah blah, but they had lived there and the upper-classes had especially intermarried with the Gallo-Frankish aristocracy at that point, they were pretty much French with a funny dialect. We can argue about how many invaded, I’m giving you the estimates of a respected expert, but none of that is the point, so I’m not going to argue about off topic B.S., losing the forest for the trees to satisfy some male ego pissing contest. I don’t have time.
20,000 is probably about right for the initial invasion, but what about all those who came afterward…William promised lands, people brought their families, etc.
IN any case, if it was only 20,000 well you more than proved my initial point, so thank you.

I assume that your projects are severely affected by time restrictions, but have you considered taking photos of those in the southern parts of south-east Asia? I’ve notice that you went as far south as Thailand. What about Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia? I have a personal interest in these areas considering that I am currently living in the area. Take for example Singapore: the main populace of the nation consists of three main races Chinese, Malay and Indians. These are “pure” Singaporeans, even though most Chinese originated from mainland China and Indians originated from India (more than five generations ago by this point) and since Singapore is in the Malay peninsula, Malays have pretty much originated from the location. The thing is, being a very cosmopolitan and a small city state of 5 million people, there are a myriad of different looks. A point to note: there are an increasing number of immigrants in the country, most of them who have been here for at least a couple of generations. If you want to find an uncountable number of different looks and try to make them “average” Singapore might be an interesting challenge for you.

Yes I’ve considered it. Please see the European Composite thread. There you can see my methodology. Those nations that you discuss are quite difficult for various reasons. And I honestly don’t think there is a gigantic difference between Malays and Filipinos, maybe slight due to greater Chinese and Euro ancestry in Filipnos compared to the more “pure” ethnic Malays in Malaysia. I expect Indonesia would show quite a bit of variation but also demographically difficult and the most time consuming thing is finding good representative pictures. I’m just not interested enough in Indonesia to do that. I’m having problems finding good pictures of Brazilian women (who are not models, porn stars, or primarily European in ancestry…the remainder is the majority of the population, but they are underrepresented on the internet due to their poverty…
Egypt I expect will be worse, especially trying to find pictures of women (many Middle Eastern women do not like being photographed and having their picture put on the net, so I’m sure I will find men and next to no women).
If you want to undertake this task, be my guest. I would be greatly interested in what you come up with. as stated before, I explained my methods in the Euro Thread.

I dont know who you are and what you are talking about buddy. But you definitely very bad know how russian people look alike. You talking crap, seriously. Russia is a big country true, but ethnic russians – the core of nation (like germans in germany, swedes in sweden) who takes 80% of total russian population, came to Siberia, Volga, and Far East from Northwestern and Central Russia (historical russian motherland – territory from Novgorod to Moscow). It was like Englishmen who came to north america or australia, some of them probably mixed with native people, but majority not. I grew up in Siberia, so i know what i am talking about. Check your sources about asian genes in russians again, all modern researchers don’t agree with you.
Average ethnic russian looks like polish or baltic, may be finnish, no wonder that genetic relations of these nations so close. Most common russian hair color light brown or dark ash blond, eyes-color blue or gray. Next common hair color – brown, eye color – green. But again it is not that dark like french for example. Russians also have a lot of natural yellowish blond people, percents out of all population less than in baltic/scandinavia however probably much more than in any other part in europe. More common dark eyed/haired russians could be find in southern russians (kuban region) or in ethnic minorities (buryats, tatars and etc). Southern russians has ties to ukrainians, so they looks similar.
I living in central russia and actually surrounded by light haired and light eyed slavic/nordic girls here, so i have a thing to mediterranean or asian women look because it is really RARE here. And by the way 80% of russian people living literally within european borders (ural mountains). Asian russia a beautiful and largest part of country territory, but because its low population density who majority of ethnic russians, it could be hardly call and indificate whole russia as asia, just like greenland which does not make denmark north america.

Ivan:
Keep in mind that most of our genes have nothing to do with phenotype. You can have various ancient admixture (like Fins) that do not show up in phenotype. Fins look more Nordic than Swedes and Norwegian (at least they are more blond and blue eyed) but they have more Asian genes as well, considerably more, especially East Fins, just like their Russian neighbors. That’s a fact. I can and have supported that.
Read this entire post and look at that charts. Even within the Russian population there are substructures (devisions) because many Northern Russians are Russified Fins, they are not originally Slavs at all. Read your history. Read why Fins want the province in Russia on their border. All those Fins on the Russian side did not disappear. LOL
http://bga101.blogspot.com/2011/01/amerindian-like-sequences-in-baltic.html
I could care less what your personal opinion is. I posted evidence to back my statement. If you are not a population genetics expert and you have no scientific findings/literature to add to this blog do not comment here again. If you try to do so I will delete your post.

You probably misunderstood my post. I know my history very well. And i know something about genetics too. Ethnic russians = slavic tribes in general + finno-ugric people admixture + some varangian admixture. It was formed in 9-11 AD around city Novgorod and future Moscow region. About this formed russians i told in my previous post. In 16 AD FORMED ethnic russians start expansion to Volga and Siberia where they rarely mixed with natives, that is why nowadays russia have so many semi-autonomic republic, these people lived there 500 years ago, and they live there now. They wasn’t assimilated and wasn’t killed.
So ethnic russians who live in Central/Northwestern russia now looks and genetically the same like ethnic russian in Siberia. Everybody can check it by social networks. That was i meant in answer to luminescent.
As for europeanizated “asian” N1c1 genes which baltic people, finns, and russian shared together, i never denied it. I deny big influence of other traditional asian haplogroups.
Cheers

Arent alot of japs mixed with other races ?all asians look the same anyways
On this site we call them Japanese.
As far as “MIXED” if you mean ancient migrations from the Asian mainland, then yes. If you mean mixed with a lot of people of European, African, etc ancestry in recent history, definitely not (on average).
And no, all Asians do not look a like.
If you write something else stupid on this site it will be deleted. Educate yourself and come back when you can say something useful to someone else. Thanks.

One more vote for Indonesians and Malaysians. They are the largest population group in SE Asia and have a diversity of genes so it would be interesting to see what the average is.

Fascinating composites. A few observations:
*SE Asian males look less masculine than NE Asian Males.
*NE Asians have very strong sexual dimorphism. SE Asians and Malays have weak sexual dimorphism.
*Samoans have close set eyes (I never noticed that before).
*The Average Asian actors are lighter than their countrymen but don’t look “white”, unlike Bollywood actors.

Why many people think that avarage Chinese , Korean and Japanese looks similar!? Nothing more wrong -except that the Chinese want to be valued more highly, then will say that there is no difference between the Chinese and Japanese.
—Avarage Chinese (I’m talking about natural people, not about the ‘stars’ after plastic surgery or people with makeup.) have round shaped faces (more adipose tissue on the face, ), wider noses, more flat faces, totaly different body building (bones). I know, I know there are many regions, but the characteristics prevail and more probable is to make mistake between —Japanese and Korean than the Japanese and Chinese.
Japanese usually have sharper facial features, narrow lips. (more like Koreans but not same) .
—Korean have sharpest shape of face (the so- called square face with prominent zygomatic bones) narrow eyes, outer corners of the eyes are raised upward. Japanese outer corners of the eyes fall down. Chinese, Korean and Japanese have totaly different eyebrows shape, body hair, skin color… I guarantee that no professional anthropologist will say that Japanese people are like Chinese people.
I can say more and more about the differences in morphology between these ethnic types.
Some wise guy said that the Japanese raped Korean women, and therefore look similar.
You forgot to add my “friend”, that Koreans routinely kidnap Japanese children (don’t open your eyes wide! Yes yes man!! It happening even now!). You probably have seen some examples of movie stars or musicians from Japan. You should know that they are not Japanese at all. 90% of them are native Koreans, using Japanese names. This is a very popular and the Japanese have to wonder why they do it. Koreans were, are and for sure long time they will be a serious problem in Japan.
———————————
About Russians. Someone asked if the Russians they look like Mongols. No. It is true that in Russia there are many regions where people look like the yellow race, but they do not call themselves Russians and would be a mistake to call them so. There are minorities of Mongolia, Manchuria, Kazakhstan… Typical Russians are Slavics nation a little bit mixed with Scandinavians. I’m Pole with Mongolian and Japanese roots and I look like typical Pole. I can tell honest! we can see clearly differences between Poles and Russians. They look different than we.
————————————————-
Looking at these pictures- allegedly of average people from countries chosen by yourself, I have serious doubts about the veracity of these types. As for ethnic types, no one is able to deceive me 😉 For example, you created avarage Filipinos. I just can see selected photos of movie stars or models. In fact, the typical Filipino is not so attractive. All these pictures are seriously idealized. You should add that you created idealized people.

Chinese ethnicity is very very diverse. I’d say North East Chinese and Koreans do look quite familiar whereas Southern Chinese usually have bigger eyes and features, well no surprise, look just closer to other South East peoples. This is just one of the most generalized difference within the so-called big umbrella of the Chinese ethnicity. I for one from Hong Kong and I look nothing like a typical Han Chinese(and I consider myself Hongkonger NOT Chinese)

It shows a lot of work! Impressive!
I have no difficulty believing about the average = beautiful/handsome people. I already read a scientific article about it some time ago. But just to be clear, I mean average of facial features, not average people in the street.

Koreans usually have the flattest fae of the East Asians, my mom has a Korwan friend and she can testify that. Japanese are mostly horse aced with very smooth flat cheekbones and small receding jaw.

Of course the Average Actress faces are meant to be good looking so not commenting on those, but wow the Average Thai Female face looks beautiful.
I’m from Japan but the Average Japanese Man looks like it was made from just one or two football (soccer) players from here? But what do I know, I never watch football games on TV, sooo…. LOL

My continent doesn’t even get it’s own page. The many Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian peoples are obviously different to one another and to Asians – even to the most lazy of observers – but I’m most surprised by the glaring absence of Aboriginal peoples of Australia considering their early divergence and geographic separation from other peoples. I don’t suppose there’s any chance of this being rectified at any time? #MaoriNotSamoan

Excellent work! I am a mix of Burmese/English/Portuguese/Armenian and always wondered which country I look closest to and can see from this I have very similar features to the Burmese average.
This is such an interesting study and work of art, I’m glad I’ve stumbled across it!

I’m disappointed there wasn’t an Average Hawaiian Male and Female. I assumed the Hawaiians would be included because Pacific Islander is in the title. This is rather interesting though! Would you consider adding an Average Hawaiian Male and Female, please?

Hm, I am half Japanese and Chinese, but look closer to the Taiwanese and Thai females than to the Japanese or Chinese. I wonder if it’s because my Japanese side is Okinawan, which is pretty close to Taiwan. XD
No idea where my Chinese side is from exactly, though.
One of my Chinese friends looks pretty close to the average Chinese woman, and it makes sense that I see her as extremely beautiful.
Also, are ages averaged here? Or do some have older/younger average ages? I noticed the Japanese and Tibetan male looks a lot older than most of them.
