Wow, What a outstanding job you are doing here man. You can even use that to track genetics such as doing crosses like Italian vs spanish and discovering how much percent of each the argentinian has for example. Is also veru curious how the average of so many faces result in excelent face simetry. Pratically all faces from all ethnices are beaultiful.
PS:Would you mind me to ask how many pictures do you use per average?

Can you do crosses… I am particularly interested in the Chinese X Italian cross….

Hi, thanks for the images.
1. would you tell me how many faces have you used for each picture and how many points on face have you used.
2. Can I have the average points for each ethnicity?

I used 25 points per face.
I don’t know the average point for each ethnicity, the software does not give me the information.

Your averages are extraordinarily attractive. We could only hope the average facial features would look so good. To come up with a true average you have to include both extremes. Scientifically your findings are seriously flawed.
June 29, 2014 at 12:49 AM
Rosbach
The extremes were included; by definition something in any given set has to be equal to or greater than everything else, and by definition an average would factor in everything.
Mathematically the results are inconclusive, as they deliberately observe only a limited sample size, but they trend toward a genuine and proven scientific understanding, far from flaw (unlike your grasp on English): average features are attractive and the closer you get to the ideal averages, the more likely you are for people to find you attractive.
November 5, 2014 at 11:58 AM
Andrew T.
Yeah, there is actually a theory that the facial features a culture finds most attractive happens to be what is actually the most “average” in the culture. Studies like this and responses like yours prove that this is most likely true.

Hi. I recently found this site and am interested in using the African and North American average images in my thesis. I am a psychology undergrad at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and presently doing my thesis on intra-racial attraction amongst Afro-Caribbean people. I have other images that I have averaged myself but I would love to use those that you have provided. Note that images will not be published and only used in the questionnaire. Please let me know if I have your permission as soon as possible.

Hi! I really hope that you can read this message
A few months ago one of my colleagues run into this amazing website. Since then, we have been doing academic research using some of the facial composites that you created. We also edited (“photoshopped”) many of them to make them look more realistic (and thus make them more suitable to conduct academic research).
We really would like to contact you to share our results with you (and also to show you how the edited versions look like).
You can write me to faguzman {at} iese dot edu

So…black Americans…but no whites?
February 6, 2011 at 5:28 AM
Rasfarengi
What Americans I had been planning to do actually…but have not got around to it. I think in a way it is hard, black Americans are more homogeneous than white Americans in reality. The ancestors of most black Americans were in America before 1820, and so although they came from all over West Africa (from Senegal to Angola) and a tab bit from Mozambique…the African component is pretty well mixed, and the only real variation is in European (mostly Northwest Euro ancestry)…which averages between 15-20% (more mixed in North than South).
White Americans are composed primarily of Brits (especially English and Scot), Irish, and Germans (especially middle and southern Germans). However, in some areas you have a lot of Eastern Europeans, Jewish, Italian, etc immigration. What a stereotypical white American looks like in California is quite different from New York City or Georgia. It is not impossible to do, not at all, but it is a lot of work…
however if you feel pressed to do a white American, be my guest.
In the end I think it will look like a English/Scot/Irish/German composite, more English and German, less Irish and Scot…if I did 20 pictures.
I would make the English ancestry about 7 pictures. I would make German 7 pictures (yes I know more people claim German than English ancestry but I don’t believe it, I think “English” is just boring so if someone is half English/German, they say they are ‘German”, a showing of last names, shows that English surnames are quite dominant over German ones, I think people go toward what is more exotic), 5 Irish, and 1 Italian.
Something like that, but I need to review demographic stats again…
November 22, 2012 at 8:06 PM
Joni
Well, surname isn’t a valid measurement. Most Germans in the US changed their surnames and anglified it, especially in World War 1.
February 6, 2011 at 5:35 AM
Rasfarengi
Joe:
One more thing…since white Americans are overwealmingly Northwest Euro in ancestry, initially I felt it not worth the effort to do, besides the Indian Princess in the woodpile, the exotic Euro…none of which would show up statistically in 20 pictures, I think I have an idea of what it will look like…a Germano-Celt., basically if you mixed a German and Irish composite and tilted it more toward Germanic, maybe more exact would be a Dutch and Irish composite, since the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes were from the North Sea and Baltic coasts (continental inland Germans look a bit different on average, I know because I’m currently living in Switzerland and see Germans all the time (many live here, most from Southern Germany).
Since the Germanic invasions into the UK did not kill off all the Celts, they basically mixed, with the Germanics rulings over everyone else…I believe I saw a study that showed the Germanic component Scotland, Ireland, and England…Ireland had the least (like less than 15%), England (don’t quote me) was about 30% or something maybe more, Scotland in-between (thanks to mixing in the low lands).
So Britian is an intermediate population between Dutch/Danish and Celts, but slightly more Celt then they let on…then add the U.S. Irish immigration into that, and Central and Southern German…that’s pretty much an average white american…Celto-Northwestern Germanic…
February 7, 2011 at 9:07 AM
Dragon Horse
Updated with average white American…used twenty pictures each composite, tried to do it based on demographics by ethnicity of last name and what I know of my own nation…so it is mostly a Celto-Germanic. Mostly English/German with some Scot and Irish…and I think one Italian American each, that is pretty much what white Americans are on average…there is some Native American admixture and even Africa, but that is only average around 3% in the total population based on the genetic studies I’ve seen, so really irrelevant. Unlike “whites” in Latin America, white Americans are almost overwealmingly European, not just European, but North Western European from Central Germany through the Netherlands, to the UK and to Ireland is pretty much the majority of their ancestry…

Great work, fascinating to look through.
I’d be curious to see an average Canadian as the French ancestry is very strong and historical treatment of First Nations differs substantially from US (leading to a stronger native American genetic component).

Elf:
It is highly unlikely they have much of a stronger genetic component based on recent studies. Here is an explanation as to why:

Dragon Horse, a lot of these are being circulated with the Argentine lady listed as being South-African, leading to speculation about racism and sampling bias. For example I first saw these images here: http://jezebel.com/#!5758201/see-the-average-face-of-women-from-40-different-countries/gallery/1
Do you know which is the correct labelling?

The labeling on this site is correct.
These are all my images, that guy stole them and did not source it back to me (asshole). He confused the South African one with the Argentina one.

Neither do I. These faces representing Brazil have conspicuous Negroid features, being darker skin the most prominent. Needless to say they do not represent me nor people whom I associate myself with.
My ancestors came from Portugal, Italy and Spain, you may want to call that Mediterranid. We may not be Aryans, BUT we still are Caucasians. Most South Brazilians are of European descent. I’m fed up of being portrayed as brown (black, mixed etc). That’s off base, and it neglects to acknowledge an important regional distinction that South Brazil constitutes. Side note, the Aryan phenotype is also common in South Brazil, just not my lineage.
If the people who made these pictures had studied the regions better, they would have known that after the United States and Argentina, Brazil has welcomed the largest number of immigrants from Europe, what happens is they settled mostly on the South, hence people of lighter complexion. There should have been more Caucasoid features in these faces. I dare to say the images would be closer to those of Argentina, starting by complexion.
Yes, I’m White (Caucasian), and I do believe Whites should also be proud of their ancestry just as Blacks have always been. If I were to have kids, I’d much prefer my kids to look like my grandparents. There is nothing racist in attempting to preserve your culture, and heritage, but thanks to the Marxist culture, people have been browbeaten and bamboozle into think otherwise.

Why are African Americans and White Americans two different groups, while Brazilians who are as diverse as Americans all together? The same goes for other Latin American countries? You should separate them between White, Mestizo, Mulato, Indigenous if you’re going to separate Americans. You make it seem like these countries are homogeneous.
July 20, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Dragon Horse
Because they are historically socially seperate groups, but in Brazil although their is more a racial continuum…if I line up 10 Brazilians who call themselves “white” and 10 who call themselves Predo, well okay, maybe you can see a difference, but what about the 2 dozen different “names” in between that people group themselves by. The social deviation in most of Latin America is not as much based on phenotype as in North America, and rarely was enshrined in law. Same is true in Mexico. I can find Mexicans who call themselves “white” who look no difference from Indios. You won’t find a many people who are considered black in America confused for white people (yes it happens sometimes, but extremely rarely).

Do not judge a country where you know only stereotypes, there are more pure white people in Brazil than Canadá or Australia…

March 25, 2013 at 5:19 AM

Psyuck, what’s the problem of Brazil being a country where the majority is mixed-race?
Yes, there are “pure whites” in Brazil (I suppose you mean whites with European ancestry only), but they are not the majority (not even within the self-declared whites), and they definitely don’t have a culture associated with them.

Any chance of a North American Native American (Indian)? That is, if any still exist. BTW, Puerto Ricans are actually Indian-or the tropical Indians who lived on Puerto Rico for thousands & thousands of years–prior to the violent invasion/subsequent vicious colonialism from the whites from Spain & Portugal; good ol’ Christopher Columbus..oops, he gobbled up Florida. Go figure. But then again, ALL western European nations spread throughout North & South America rapaciously grabbing up land & killing/enslaving native peoples.

This is so cool. To see all of these different looking people makes me feel so happy that we all look different. It’s beautiful.
What if people didn’t do all of those horrible things to one another and we all got to meet each other in a less hostile way? I doubt the world would be perfect. But what if each new generation didn’t have to be burdened with the knowledge of all of this hatred that our ancestors created? What if all of the wars, genocides, and slavery just never happened? I often think about how things could be if we were all born into this world with a clean slate. To just be able to learn and experience, and interact with zero baggage. If I had the power, I would send 5 million babies to a new world. I would wipe the memories of 10 million adults of anything that had to do with hatred and replace that gap with knowledge of all the worlds sciences and send them to raise the children. Just start over…

I agree with some posters here. There are many of us that are neither black, white, asian, or otherwise, we are a mixture of both. Don’t be afraid, make a mixture of what all of us lost our inhibitions and got jiggy with each other all at the same time. I think it would be interesting and truly representative of what our future descendants will probably look like. Make it proportional to the true population make up of the US, in other words, make an montage of 100 Americans, with 19 of them black, etc., so as to truly represent what a melding of America looks like.

Mixing races on a larger scale is destroying the Germanic race.
I don’t have anything against mixed race couples, they just have to be a small minority like in Europe where I live.
In the states within 200 years, maybe even 100 years, there won’t be a white guy or girl left if you continue on this pace…suit yourself, i live in europe but it’s still a sad thought…

US are second rate whites anyway, culturally and genetically, always have been…only the poor and retarded crossed over the ocean to the New world. The good ones stayed in Europe, that’s why all the UNESCO heritage of mankind is located in Europe and not in the US.

U.S. are second rate whites? Ironically those second rate whites as you put it have created the greatest empire in the world. In the U.S I doesn’t matter where your family came from. It doesn’t define you and it certainly doesn’t stop you from whatever you want to achieve. I guess it’s because they were salt of the earth stock instead of over privileged folk they actually had drive.

Your comment shows your complete lack of knowledge in the area of immigration. Have you ever heard of primogeniture? In English noble families, the firstborn got everything, leaving the other equally well born siblings to find their fortunes, often in the New World.
Is there something that you know about the genetics of US whites that you would like to share? I would expect inbred Europeans to have far more genetic problems, including mental retardation, than the US mixed populations. You don’t appear to know your Genetics either.
Culturally inferior? Enough with the European snobbery. I don’t even understand how you could determine superiority or inferiority of a culture, it all has to do with context in which the culture functions. If you want an example of a culture that no longer works, look no further than that of the European aristocracy, clinging to titles and entitlements in a world where they have become irrelevant.
Finally I’m surprised at your comment that UNESCO world heritage sites are confined to Europe. I have been to many all over the world.
You embody the most elitist, ethnocentric, and intentionally misinformed
American stereotype of Europeans. I’m happy that the vast majority of Europeans are not like you.

Totally cool, and relevant in present day. I have a Puerto Rican friend who looks nothing like the composite. Darker, brachycephalic head, wider nose. Much taller than average. When he said he was from the mountains, this is typical of remnant populations that have been overrun by a new group. Long story short, he’s probably descended from a distinct group called the Orotoids, Who arrived in PR 3,000 years before the Tainos. Their contemporary descendant’s faces matched his. He knew nothing about this.
Only one problem. Orotoids have kinky hair in the pics. His was straight.
When I asked him about this, he admitted he straightens his otherwise kinky hair!
The point is that these composites have predictive power for the individual.
Thanks for maintaining this site.

Where are the Native American faces in this project? The Americas are home to many different nations, in North America and Central and South America (Think the Inuit, the Lakota/Sioux/Apache, the Cherokee/Choctaw, the Seminole, the Iroquis/Algonquin/Ojibwa, the Taino, the descendants of the Mayans and the Aztecs….)
If you really want to show what the different populations of these regions look like in composite, how can you exclude Native people?

Hi, I´m Luis from Argentina, and I was wondering why did you post a separate average for white americans and black americans, but not for white brazilians and black brazilians? And I would like to know where did you get the photos. Were they taken in a specific place in each country, or are they from different parts overall the country? Im sure that if you make an average picture of Porto Alegre, Brazil and one of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, they would be very different pictures! And im also a little surprised by the peruvian average beacause I´ve lived in Peru for 5 years, and let me tell you that the true peruvian average is much darker the picture you posted.
Thank you for your time!

Curious
Hmm, I look more like the average Central African female than the African/Black American female in the photo above (2nd photo). In fact, I have been told that I look exotic/beautiful like the women in Africa and Haiti. However, my family has lived in America for more than 50 years, so it’s weird (and amazing) that, averagely, I (and my family) share less similar features to the African Americans in the above photos, but look more similar to the average-looking Africans.

I don’t know why I don’t look like the Peruvian average (I am from Peru 😛 ). Whatever, interesting job, and I am also interested in this topics of human “races” (I like to say more “ethnicity”, but I am using “race” because most people are more familiar with that word) and in its study.
I think that it would be good if “races” try to remain “pure” (only to preserve human biodiversity), but I am not totally against “inter-racial” marriages, because there aren’t bad too, all is question of balance 😀
P.S. 1 I am not racist! I think that all of we should respect each other, whatever our races are!
P.S. 2 Don’t read the comment that I left before, it was a mistake from me.

Reading the comments, especially from Brazilians, seems like they want people to know they are very white, almost as if being mixed with black is a bad thing. That strikes me as insecure, racist and ignorant. You are not what your race is. That is only what makes us look a certain way but it doesn’t make us who we are.
Ok so lots of Brazilians are white, big deal, the picture here looks mulatto, so what, get over it already.
PS, I’m not Brazilian, thank God, seems to be a lot of racists running around over there.

there are 2 brazil’s the north and the south the north is black and mixed while in the south of brazil the majority are whites.
brazil from 1820s-1930s brazil received allot of European immigration from Germany , Poland , Italy , Portugal do not get confused where not taking about colonial times where talking about 1820s-1930s these waves of immigrants did not mix with black like the colonial settlers anyways brazil received a total of 5-6 million European immigrants from 1820-1930 in time these populations grew and today there is 91,000,0000 whites out of 205,000,000 Brazilians 49% of the Brazilian population brazil is the 5th most populated country in the world its very diverse but brazil is a white country not a black country if you don’t believe me here are my sources in Wikipedia :

No Canada? Well aren’t we just forgotten lol 🙂 Nah, I’m kidding; Canada is really culturally diverse – perhaps more so than the States, so it’s no surprise that an average isn’t available.

Europe, granted, has a more homogenous population, so it is feasible to make an average of all faces. The Americas, however, by historical reasons are far more diversified.
Take Brazil, humongous population, ridiculous size, so diverse (although possible to break into regions North closer to Black, West closer to Indian and South closer to White) that an average may end quite unlike you would normally find.
The same would apply to America, though impact was reduced by breaking into the two biggest ethnicities, curiously neither black nor white show a hint of the huge Latino population you might find, specially in the South (Florida, California, Texas, New Mexico).

The Brazilian averages do have a striking resemblance to many Brazilian males and females I see everywhere around me here, but I also must say the results seem kind of verging too much on the African-descent looks. High degrees of racial mixing and the huge diversity of the gene pool that’s been mixing through the centuries mean almost any phenotype is regularly found in Brazil, but I’d say the average Brazilian man and woman look a little lighter-skinned and Caucasian-like than the images shown above, if you blend images of Brazilians taking into consideration the exact demographics of the country (~ 45% White, 43% Mixed, 10% Black, 1.5% Asian, 0.5% Native American). Light brown skin, wavy dark hair, brown eyes and facial features tending to typical Southern European but with significant Western African influence. I’d say those would be the defining looks of an average Brazilian person.

What about native north american composites? They’re not all extinct like most seem to think, just much harder to find. i’m 1/4 Seminole on my dad’s side

I’m curious, but have you considered doing other Americans, such as Canada and/or USA with every ethnicity combined, or Asian Americans, and Native North Americans?
I’m also curious how Korean-Americans would compared to the existing South Koreans’ average.

I am wondering also if there will be any averages on Native Americans, as I am Native American myself and was looking for it when I first came to the site, but there isn’t one here that I can see, unless I’m missing something – in which case, my apologies. It would be nice though for my personal curiosity. It’s understandable that one wasn’t done right away, though, considering I know how extremely rare it is to actually meet another native here in the States – aside from the closer share of my relatives, of course.

Hi,
I find this inconsistent: that the site displays the average Mexican or Brazilian male and female, but not the average American ones. Instead, it shows the average white American male and female and the average black American ones. It doesn’t make any sense. One would have gotten very different results if had calculated the average American, independently of ethnicity, or calculated the average white or black or native Mexican or Brazilian and so on.
Having said that, I admit these are quite common looking Brazilians, but they would be less African Brazilian and more native Brazilian in the North Region and more white Brazilian in the South Region.
